Andros Island

The second largest island in the Cyclades chain of islands, Andros island was a gift from king Rhadamanthus to Andros, the grandson of Apollo, as Rhadamanthus was pleased with his service.

Andros is a delight to explore on foot. Old stone footpaths cross the island and take you to secluded beaches, old monasteries, mountainous villages, windmills, caves, ancient sites and mountain tops with breathtaking view.

An island with rich history and cultural past, Andros hosts three interesting museums. The most famous is the Museum of Contemporary Art that is found in Chora, the capital of the island. This museum was founded in 1979 by Goulandris Foundation and has two rooms.

There are many important monasteries all around the island of Andros. Very important is the Monastery of Agia Marina in the village of Apikia. Founded in 1325 AD, this monastery suffered in the Medieval Ages by pirate invasions.
